Conventional Treatments

I have listed common medical treatments below for reference. Check with your medical doctor before taking these medications as a precaution. Some of them could interact adversely with other medications you may be taking, cause allergic reaction, and/ or result in harmful side effects.

I have used many of these medications but experienced relief for a short time and had severe, unpleasant side effects. Mostly, they deal with symptoms, not the underlying causes that contribute to the disease. Since you are dealing with one of the most important issues—namely, your health—it would be wise to make informed decisions that would be most beneficial to your health.

Sinusitis:

Antibiotics (prescribed) help eliminate sinusitis caused by a bacterial infection. Remember to take acidophilus simultaneously to preserve good bacterial flora in the intestines.

Corticosteroids (e.g., Flonase, Beconase, or Nasacort) reduce swelling of severe inflammation of sinuses. Side effects may include water retention, irritability, stomach upset, and loss of sleep.

Decongestants and antihistamines (e.g., Afrin, Sudafed, Allegra, or Claritin) help dry up or shrink the excessive mucus and help drain the sinuses. Side effects may include drowsiness, nervousness, and sleep disturbances.

Over-the-counter medications like aspirin, ibuprofen, and acetaminophen (e.g., Advil, Tylenol, Bayer) can relieve headache, facial pain, and sore throat discomforts. Check which ones reduce pain and/or inflammation and be aware of side effects.

Allergy shots can be given to desensitize you to the allergen by stimulating the antibodies that block the body’s reaction.

Phage therapy involves use of tiny viruses called “bacteriophages” which have been around for billions of years. They kill targeted bacteria without disturbing normal bacteria needed for health.

Sinus surgery is necessary—in certain cases—to remove nasal blockage (endoscopic sinus surgery) or open the sinuses (balloon rhinoplasty). The latter procedure is less invasive.

Rhinitis:

Antihistamines (e.g., Benaedryl, Allegra, Claritin) help dry up or shrink the excessive mucus and help drain the sinuses. Also it relieves itchy throat, nose, and eyes. Side effects may include drowsiness, dry mouth, nose, and eyes.

Atrovent nasal spray (prescription drug) is effective when runny nose is the main symptom.

Decongestants (e.g., Sudafed, Actifed) reduce nasal congestion by narrowing blood vessels. Side effects may include nervousness, dizziness, insomnia, and palpitations.

Leukotriene blockers (e.g., Singulair) reduce allergic symptoms such as excessive mucus and inflammation.

Over-the-counter mouth sprays and lozenges can provide temporary relief of sore throat and cough.

Hydrocortisone will alleviate itching associated with skin inflammation and rash. It can be bought at a drug store without prescription.
