What is hypnosis and hypnotherapy?
Hypnosis is a naturally occurring state we all experience as when you are completely absorbed in a movie that you block everything else out or drive to a particular destination but don’t recall every turn you made to get there. Hypnosis is also a pleasant state of mental and physical relaxation similar to the moment you are about to fall asleep. Contrary to some misconceptions about it, you are neither asleep nor unconscious. You do not lose your mind or control. You cannot be forced to be hypnotized or be induced to say or do anything that goes against your core values and integrity. Rather, hypnosis is characterized by heightened senses, enhanced awareness and greater suggestibility where your mind is focused and is more receptive to new learning. It is a tool to reveal your habit patterns, conditioned beliefs, that is, your “internal programs” so they can be understood and changed when no longer useful to you.
How hypnosis and hypnotherapy work?
Hypnotherapy uses hypnosis in a therapeutic context. A hypnotherapist facilitates a safe, relaxed hypnotic state where the critical factor of the mind (conscious mind) is bypassed and speaks directly to the subconscious mind to release and reframe thought patterns and habits, giving it positive suggestions to make the changes you desire. Hypnotic suggestions motivate your subconscious mind to move in agreement with your conscious goals, helping you to be successful and balanced in every facet of your life. Hypnotherapy is a holistic, effective, and lasting method for creating physical, mental, and spiritual health and well-being by harnessing the power of your own mind. The American Medical Association officially approved the clinical use of hypnosis in 1958, and the American Psychological Association approved it in 1960.
*Hypnotherapists are not licensed as healing arts practitioners in the state of California. Some conditions may require a medical or psychological referral.
Who can be hypnotized?
Anyone has the ability to be hypnotized. Some are more suggestible to hypnosis than others based on willingness and openness. Hypnosis may not be suitable for some people with psychiatric disorders, mental impairment, and very young children.
What does hypnosis feel like?
You will experience a profound sense of physical and mental relaxation. You will feel peaceful and calm as the automatic internal chatter calms down. During this relaxed state, your senses are heightened and concentration is focused, being aware of your surrounding and communication with the therapist. You are not asleep, unconscious, or under any mind-control. You will come out of hypnosis feeling wonderful, calm, and refreshed.
Is hypnosis dangerous or harmful?
No. Hypnosis has been regarded as a safe and effective treatment modality for various medical and behavioral problems by American Medical Association. Hypnosis is a part of your natural state of mind, being aware and in control. You are not “brainwashed” to say or do anything that is disagreeable and in conflict with your core values and ethical principles.
How many sessions are needed?
Just as each one of us is unique with individual needs, the length of therapy necessary for change varies accordingly. However, hypnotherapy generally takes less time than traditional talk-therapy because of its direct access to the subconscious mind to effect desired changes.
Is phone session as effective as in-person?
Yes. The nature of hypnotherapy is conducive to telephone work. Being in your own comfortable, quiet place without interruptions, you can be more relaxed and be open to therapeutic suggestions. Phone sessions are ideal for those who may feel uncomfortable discussing issues in-person or require more flexible hours. Also, it is suitable for people who may have physical discomfort or have difficulty traveling long distances.
Guided Imagery
Guided Imagery involves the use of relaxation and imagination/visualization utilizing all the senses (sight, sound, taste, smell, and feeling) for healing and making desired changes. Imagery as a healing tool has been used throughout the ages and in all parts of the world. Assisting others to direct their inner imagery to a greater awareness of their overall health and well-being has been increasingly established by research to demonstrate a positive impact in various healing processes. It may be used to help clients cope with their disease, regain a sense of control, and find the strength to make necessary changes in their lifestyle and health practices. Imagery is a highly relaxing, natural, and safe modality that guides clients to trust their inner experiences and imagination to be a source of insight, healing, and personal growth.
Neuro Linguistic Programming
Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) studies the structure of how we experience and interpret the world. It posits that an individual’s thoughts and words interact to create one’s perception of the world so by changing one’s outlook, a person can improve one’s attitude and action. By gaining an understanding of how we create and maintain our inner thoughts and feelings when we have challenging issues, we can tap into all the resources necessary for success within ourselves. From this premise, NLP has developed models and techniques for quickly and effectively changing thoughts, behaviors, and beliefs that limit people from getting what they want by amplifying helpful behaviors and diminishing negative ones, leading them closer to desired outcomes. NLP is widely used to improve various skills needed in sales, inter-personal relationships, and counseling people to overcome limiting beliefs. It leads to better understanding of each individual’s learning style that would aid effectiveness in educational fields. Parents can help their children to develop healthy self-image as they deal with life’s challenges. Overall, NLP is a set of very powerful, effective tools for personal growth and development.
