This is just plain COOL!

It's thrilling to learn about a program like Haven for Hope, a brand new 37-acre campus for homeless people. While housing and providing nutritious meals for thousands of men, women, and children, the facility will also offer mental health services. The goal is to rehabilitate the homeless so they can find work and be independent and productive. Such comprehensive services for helping the homeless is new (other than state prisons) and could become a new national model if successful. I certainly wish that it would be wildly successful and copied for the benefit of the homeless and ultimately for the society at large.

Books have had a huge, positive impact on my growth as a person. Currently I am reading A Path with Heart by Jack Kornfield - sure to become one of my favorites. It is a deeply, honestly, and kindly engaging book on spiritual life. Certainly we can all agree that reading is essential to learning. So continuing on the theme from the earlier post about the virtues of reading, here are 10 renowned, inspirational leaders and their favorite books. What's your favorite book?

Mackenzie Bearup is a girl who would be active like others her age but her condition called reflex sympathetic dystrophy limits that ability. She feels great pain whenever something touches her knee - even a gentle, light touch like the wind. So to cope with the pain, Mackenzie turned to reading which helped immensely. Then she turned her love of reading to collecting books for the needy children. Eventually, an organization called Sheltering Books was established that donates books to libraries and shelters. Mackenzie believes that novels can turn people's lives around. "I really think reading can do that to someone," she says. I couldn't agree more.

Dominic is a dedicated practitioner of Zen Buddhism and poet. Here I share with you two of his recent poems that really resonated with me as I reflected on my present life. The themes are interrelated, which deal with one's attitude toward life's challenges. They are about surrendering, going with the flow and what we unexpectedly experience in return... a smile!

I Give Up!
I throw my hands up and say
I give up and go my own way
I feel a whole lot better in letting go
Now there is nothing there as I know
So when ever you feel that life has you down
Give up right there, create a smile from a frown

flowing water Pictures, Images and Photos

You Know When You Go with the Flow
The roaring brook goes over the rocks
Inside its stream is filled and stocked
The fish in the current know where to live
The flow that keeps moving and also gives
So you see to resist would not be complete
Flowing rapidly gives no effort for this is a treat

Here is a hallmark card message that illustrates a great metaphor for discovery of inner strength and encouragement.

The Oak Tree

Tree Pictures, Images and Photos
A mighty wind blew night and day.
It stole the oak tree's leaves away,
Then snapped its bark
until the oak was tired and stark...

But still the oak tree held its ground
while other trees fell all around....
The weary wind gave up and spoke,
"How can you still be standing, Oak?"

The oak tree said, "I know that you
can break each branch of mine in two,
carry every leaf away,
shake my limbs, and make me sway.
But I have roots stretched in the earth,
growing stronger since my birth.

You'll never touch them, for you see,
they are the deepest part of me.
Until today, I wasn't sure
of just how much I could endure.
But now I've found, with thanks to you,
I"m stronger than I ever knew.
