Signs and Symptoms of Sinusitis
The following are common signs and symptoms of sinusitis. Some are experienced more frequently and universally while others are considered minor occurrences.
- Chronic runny nose
- Thick, yellow-green mucus caused by infection
- Postnasal drip (mucus down the back of throat)
- Difficult to breathe through the nose due to nasal congestion

- Loss or reduced sense of smell
- Swelling around eyes and cheeks
- Heaviness of head when bending forward
- Headache
- Facial pain and pressure (forehead, cheeks, nose, and behind eyes)
- Tooth pain occurs when infection in a tooth extends to maxillary sinuses located near upper teeth
- Bad breath (halitosis)
- Extreme fatigue unrelieved by rest and accompanying irritability
- Ear discomfort as middle ear space is lined by the same mucous membrane as the nose and sinuses
- Coughing as your body tries to clear the mucus going down your throat
- Sore throat due to irritation caused by postnasal drip
- Hoarseness due to inflammation of the vocal cords caused by postnasal mucus
- Insomnia and/or other sleep disturbances
- Fever during acute stage
- Dizziness or lightheadedness
- Foggy headedness and difficult to concentrate
- Depression and irritability
